THYROID BASICS
Thyroid diseases are complex and require proper diagnoses and treatment. Whether you’ve got Hashimoto’s, Graves, Hypothyroidism, Hyperthyroidism or had your thyroid removed, you’re in the right place. The diet & lifestyle information I teach supports a range of thyroid issues.
Hashimoto’s is the world’s most common auto-immune disease, affecting at least 1 in 8 women. It affects more women in men in a ratio of about 8:1.
It is also grossly under-diagnosed and misdiagnosed.
It is an auto-immune thyroid disease, but really it is a multi-system disease. It affects not only your thyroid but your brain, gut, liver, immune system, hormones, blood sugar and more. It’s really a whole body disease and needs to be considered in that way.
The discussions on this website and my social media & podcast are designed to spread information and awareness of Hashimoto’s in a way that is both positive and practical.
As part of Thyroid Awareness Month in 2023, I put together this 8 part mini series on a range of ‘thyroid basics’ – I suggest you start by watching these for good basic information.

- Why Raise Awareness
- What can go wrong with your thyroid?

This information is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. It is intended provide you with lifestyle factors to consider to help you thrive not just survive.
Always seek medical advice if you suspect you have a thyroid problem.
JUST DIAGNOSED, WHAT NOW?
So, you’ve recently been diagnosed with a thyroid problem but where do you start?
The truth is, there is no magic answer to this. Welcome to the complexity of having a thyroid problem I wish it weren’t that way, but honestly, it is. There is no simple solution or magic fix.
BUT there are many things you can try/research and explore over time.
I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 1996 and have spent a lot of the last almost 25 years, researching & trying all the things I can do aside from take my medication to feel good. I have to tell you, you deserve better than to be told just take your pills and you’ll be fine.
Without my medication I’d be dead, but if that’s all I did I’d still be miserable.
A holistic (meds + diet + lifestyle + mindset) approach is required to thrive not just survive. True story … my story.
What works for me might not for you. We all have to find our own way but there are certain things that, having been around the thyroid traps for a while, I’ve seen feature for most people throughout their journey.
Many people find starting with dietary changes bring significant improvement in symptoms, so is a common starting place, but it’s just one aspect that may help.
a simple starting point
I suggest that you start with reading my book and/or listening to my podcast and then decide which aspect of a thyroid-friendly lifestyle you’d like to work on. I have programs to help you too if you need more guidance.
I wrote my book, Let’s Talk Thyroid with the new thyroid patient in mind. It’s a great starting place because it starts the conversation about how to live well with your thyroid condition.
Thyroid health is complex, but I’ve made it simple.
A key concept in the book is to KISS (Keep It Super Simple) so you can make progress but not feel overwhelmed.
just know that you are not alone and there is hope!
Hello, I’m Annabel.
I am a thyroid health author, advocate, podcaster, coach and the face and voice behind all things Let’s Talk Thyroid, which is all about spreading postive & practical thyroid help.
Since being diagnosed with Hashimoto’s in 1996 I’ve spent most of my adult life learning through much education, trial & error how to live well with Hashimoto’s.
I believe that if you can make simple but significant changes to your diet & lifestyle, you will build a solid foundation on which to manage your health long-term. This will mean you can then spend your money on doctors and health professionals to tweak your specific medical concerns and not pay them to teach you the basics.
I walk my talk and love to help people just like you avoid years of feeling crappy by learning early how to life a thyroid-friendly lifestyle.
