Ep 57. Reversing Hashimoto’s | with Dr Anshul Gupta

When you’re diagnosed with Hashimoto’s a common question is ‘can I reverse Hashimoto’s?’ or ‘is there a cure?’.

As Hashimoto’s is an autoimmune disease and autoimmune diseases aren’t usually considered ‘curable’ this can be a hard question to answer. Dr Gupta has a very positive view on this.

What is ‘Reversing Hashimoto’s?

Dr Gupta explains that just like if you were to have for example a bacteria infection, it can be cured (but can occur again), so too with Hashimoto’s.

He says that if a person if able to have:

  • normal thyroid antibodies
  • normal thyroid lab markers AND
  • no thyroid symptoms

then they are CURED. No just in ‘remission’ either. However, the Hashimoto’s can be re-triggered.

Do not let people tell you that this is how you’ll have to live for the rest of your life. It’s the beginning of a new story.

Common Thyroid Triggers

The most common categories of triggers for Hashimoto’s are:

  1. Food sensitivities.
  2. Nutritional deficiencies.
  3. Toxins.
  4. Stress.
  5. Infections.

It can be tricky to identify your triggers as there can be a few! Dr Gupta has put together a quiz to help people identify their most likely triggers. You can take the quiz here. 

The Mitochondrial-thyroid connection

The mitochondria are the engine of the cell. Many Hashimoto’s symptoms are mitochondrial related eg brain fog, energy, weight, gut health and mood. When you look after your mitochondria, you look after your thyroid. There is a detailed discussion of this topic in Dr Gupta’s book Reversing Hashimoto’s.

Food is a good way of  supporting your mitochondria and your thyroid.

  1. Good fats.
  2. Good variety of colouring veggies. 8-9 cups a day!
  3. High quality protein – whether plant based or animal protein.

3 step process to Reverse your Hashimoto’s:

  1. Find your triggers.
  2. Start fixing your thyroid and your mitochondria (food & supplements whilst working with a professional).
  3. Remove toxins (stress, infections, toxins)

It’s a very clear and helpful read. Dr Gupta does a great job of keeping it simple enough to not be overwhelmed whilst explaining the complexities of Hashimoto’s. It’s an excellent resource.
